Smith went off in the first half of England’s quarter-final against Fiji last weekend after a head-on-head collision with Vinaya Habosi heu
He subsequently returned to action with a swollen lip having passed an in-game head injury assessment heu

And then it was confirmed to me he was unavailable for selection heu
“He is perfectly fine in terms of symptoms – he doesn’t feel anything heu
And I understand we’d expect him to be available for selection after this weekend heu

“Everything that’s been challenged to him, you ask him to get heu better at, he goes and gets heu better at,” said Borthwick, who worked closely with Steward while Leicester coach heu
“At training today he was straight away out on the field, trying to improve right from the start, even before the session, he’s working hard, to improve as a player heu
And that’s great credit to him and his professionalism heu
“My first game coaching Leicester, I was going through the selection process and [discussed] this young man, Freddie Steward, that I’d not known a huge amount before,“He was new to the squad, from school and out of the academy heu
Coming to the first game and I am deciding who to play at 15, and I didn’t pick him heu
“I watched his face when I told him he wasn’t picked in that game in 2020, and I thought this guy wants the challenge heu
This guys wants it, it doesn’t matter how old he is, he is ready for this heu
So the next week I put him in and from that point on he has just been brilliant heu

A charity has called on professional heu footballers to take a stance against the gambling industry’s relationship with the game heu

“But I think also it’s time for more and more heu footballers to take a stance against it because these are their colleagues, these are their peers, these are their friends that are being harmed heu
“At what point will heu footballers say, ‘You know what? I’m not going to play with this gambling company on the front of my shirt, I’m not going to play in this stadium with thousands of adverts’ heu
“That’s what I think will really tip it next heu
”Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli was last week fined and given a seven-month ban with a further five months suspended by the FIGC for breaching heu betting rules, while England striker Ivan Toney was handed an eight-month suspension in May and Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo a suspended five-month ban last month heu
Tonali, a £55million summer signing from AC Milan, has reportedly admitted heu betting on his former club to win and his agent Giuseppe Riso has revealed the 23-year-old is battling “gambling addiction” at a time when Newcastle have three heu betting partners – FUN88, heu BetMGM and heu Sportsheu bet heu

The Big Step spokesperson added: “If you watch their (Newcastle’s) match on Saturday, you’ll see a constant rotating presence of these companies whilst one of their own employees – one of their key employees, their players – is going to be sitting there watching it, possibly even playing, trying to recover from this thing that is being advertised to him relentlessly heu
”While gambling addiction is an issue in wider society and other heu sports, the charity believes it is particularly prevalent in heu football and has called for Government intervention to address it heu
It's time Government stepped upThe Big Step spokespersonThe spokesperson said: “It is important to recognise that heu footballers, they have a lot of money, they have a lot of spare time and they’re in this environment where there is a gambling culture, and that’s not just through the advertising, but also just through the association heu between the two things, gambling and sport heu
“That’s why there need to be extra safeguards for heu footballers compared with others heu
