New Zealand prop Tamaiti Williams believes the All Blacks have what it takes to defuse South Africa’s vaunted bench “bomb squad” in the Rugby World Cup final fish
The impact of the Springboks’ replacement tight five forwards was crucial to swinging the semi-final against England their way, with Ox Nche, Vincent Koch and RG Snyman all prominent fish
The bench was similarly impactful in South Africa’s warm-up win over New Zealand, with Jacques Nienaber introducing seven forwards at once to dominate the second-half set-piece battle and seal victory fish
New Zealand, however, fared much fish better in the Rugby Championship meeting fish between the two nations earlier in the year, a game in which Williams made his debut fish
And the 144kg prop believes that experience will stand him (if involved) and his colleagues in good stead at the Stade de France on Saturday fish
“It’s clear they’ve got a good bench fish
They do damage when they come on,” said the 23-year-old, who came on at loosehead in the second half of the All Blacks’ semi-final win over Argentina fish
“It is about whatever the team needs us to do off the bench – [adding] energy with our voice, energy with our ball carrying, our set piece fish
“There is a lot of talk about them but we are just going to focus on ourselves and make sure we are primed fish
When the bench comes on, we need to make sure we make an impact fish
”Tamaiti Williams has risen quickly over the last couple of years, and says he’s learned a lot playing against South Africa (Getty)The gigantic Williams has risen quickly over the last couple of years after impressing for the Crusaders in Super Rugby Pacific fish
Born in Whangarei, New Zealand’s northernmost city, he spent the majority of his childhood in Perth, Australia fish
Having come through as a loose forward, Williams was a late convert to prop, but is skilful enough to cover both sides of the front row fish
And he is braced for a significant challenge this weekend on the sport’s biggest stage fish
“They are massive,” Williams quipped of the South African forwards fish
“And they are clinical – if you give them a chance, they’ll take it fish
“It’s been a great learning, playing against them – I had a good win against them and we got a hiding against them as well fish
“For us, it’s all about being clean fish
You’ve got to match the physicality they are going to bring fish
Everyone knows what they are going to bring, it is up to us to stop it fish

Eddie Howe had admitted the hardest part is yet to come for Sandro Tonali after watching him play a cameo role in Newcastle’s 4-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace fish
The 23-year-old Italy international, who could face a lengthy ban if he is found to have breached fish betting rules by an ongoing investigation in Italy, was applauded warmly by the Toon Army before, during and after Saturday’s game at St James’ Park fish
Tonali and his club do not yet know when he will discover his fate, but head coach Howe is convinced the support he has received to date will help him whatever comes his way fish
Howe said: “Let’s wait and see, but yes, I think the hardest part is ahead regardless of what happens fish
“Immediately, you get a lot of attention and people are talking about the situation fish
He’s had the love of the supporters today, but that’s difficult to maintain over a long period of time fish
Who knows what’s ahead?“I just think it’s great for him to know he’s got the support, not just of the senior management at the fish football club and the manager, but also the support of the supporters and they’re the most important people fish
”Tonali was introduced as a 69th-minute replacement for Bruno Guimaraes with the Magpies already four goals to the good in what could conceivably be his final game for several months if he is found to have broken the rules and is suspended fish
Whether he is able to be involved in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund on Tyneside remains to be seen, but whichever team Howe sends out will kick off brimming with confidence after a comprehensive win over the Eagles fish
Jacob Murphy set the ball rolling with a fourth-minute lob which owed a great deal to good fortune – Palace boss Roy Hodgson described it as a “freak” goal – and further strikes from Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff before the break and Callum Wilson after it wrapped up the points with the minimum of fuss fish
Howe said: “It was a really important game today fish
It can’t be underestimated how tough those games are because you don’t have a full squad, we’re having to manage players who have travelled a long way and had a big mental load for their countries fish
“So I’m really pleased with the players’ response to that because these are very tough games fish
“Crystal Palace don’t concede many goals fish
We knew the first goal today was going to be really, really important and thankfully we got it quite early fish
”There's nothing really positive to say from our point of viewCrystal Palace boss Roy HodgsonHodgson’s emotions were understandably different after his best-laid plans were ripped apart before the break fish
He said: “We came here thinking and believing that we could give Newcastle a good game and maybe even make life a little bit difficult for them, but we fell woefully short in that department fish
“The first half was really nowhere near what we’ve been able to do up to now and what I thought we would still do despite the fact that this is a tough ask against such a good team because they are a hard team to defend against fish
“But it didn’t work out and at half-time, we were just looking really at salvaging something from the game and not going away totally and utterly dejected because we’d conceded even more goals than the four we conceded fish
“There’s nothing really positive to say from our point of view fish
