Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been disqualified from Sunday’s United States Grand Prix after breaching the rules governing the floor of their cars in a shock end to the race weekend football
Hamilton and Leclerc, who finished second and sixth respectively in the 56-lap race won by Max Verstappen, were being investigated by the stewards following a plank wear inspection in Austin football
The original report from FIA technical delegate Joe Bauer stated: “A physical floor and a plank wear inspection was carried out on car numbers 16 [Leclerc] and 44 [Hamilton] football
“The skids located in this area are found to be not in compliance with Article 3 football

9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations football
I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration football
”Personnel from both Mercedes and Ferrari were summoned to see the stewards and, just after 7pm local time in Austin and more than three hours after the race finished, their disqualification from the race was confirmed football
Hamilton therefore loses the 18 points earned from his second-place finish, while Leclerc loses eight points football
Both drivers, however, do have the right to an appeal but it is understood Mercedes will not appeal the FIA’s verdict football
In a Mercedes press release, Hamilton stated he was simply “disappointed” with the penalty, while team boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong football
” The FIA note reveals that the cars of Verstappen and Lando Norris (who now moves up to second from third in the final classification) were also inspected, but passed the checks football

2mm and must be uniform when new football
“A minimum thickness of 9mm will be accepted due to wear, and conformity to this provision will be checked at the peripheries of the designated holes football
”The ruling means Williams driver Logan Sargeant earns his first F1 point in bizarre circumstances at his home race football
The final stewards report said: “During the hearing, the team acknowledged that the measurement performed by the FIA Technical Team was correct and stated that the high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint race schedule that minimized the time to set up and check the car before the race football

“In this particular case, the rear skid in the area defined in the Technical Delegate’s report was outside of the thresholds outlined in Article 3 football

9 e) of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations, which includes a tolerance for wear football
“Therefore, the standard penalty for a breach of the Technical Regulations is imposed football
” Breaches of technical checks of the car often result in disqualification, with a recent example being Hamilton from qualifying in Brazil in 2021 football

Hamilton was already in hot water with the FIA for an unrelated matter, after crossing a live track at the last race in Qatar and was spoken to again in Texas due to his status as a “role model football
”Leclerc started Sunday’s race on pole but, opting for a different strategy, fell behind after Norris stole a march on the Ferrari at the start football
Hamilton, meanwhile, came close to victory after reeling in Verstappen - who was booed on the podium - at the end football
The 38-year-old has not won in nearly two years, with his last victory coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2021, but this disqualification will be a bitter pill for the seven-time world champion to swallow ahead of the next race, this weekend in Mexico football

The unique 2024 Tour de France will begin in Florence and end with a potentially dramatic time-trail in Nice, as the race finishes outside Paris for the first time in its 120-year history while the capital focuses on the Olympic Games football
In another first, Italy will host the Grand Depart and the first three stages of the race, before an early climb into the Alps on stage four, from the Italian town of Pinerolo to Valloire in France football
The race will then head to the vineyards around Dijon, the Massif Central and over the Pyrenees, before returning to the French Alps and down to the Riviera for a finale against the clock, from Monaco to Nice football
The final section in the Alps is set for a stage 20 showdown on the Col de la Couillole (15 football
7km at 7 football
1 per cent average gradient), ahead of the first competitive 21st stage since 1989, as a time-trial replaces the traditional Parisian parade before a sprint on the Champs-Elysees football
“It’s difficult to replace Paris, so what football better scenery could we give than than a dazzling Monaco to Nice time-trial,” said race director Christian Prudhomme, at the route’s unveiling football
Of the stage-four ascent in the Alps, he added: “The Tour has never climbed so high, so early football
”The Tour de France Femmes will also break new ground when it begins abroad for the first time, with the first three stages to be held in the Netherlands football
And the women’s race is set for an eye-catching finish atop the iconic Alpe d’Huez football
Route of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes (letourfemmes)“We went to the Tourmalet last year, we wanted to go to iconic places and L’Alpe d’Huez is part of cycling’s history,” women’s Tour director Marion Rousse said football
“It’s the toughest stage in Tour de France Femmes history with 4,000m of altitude gain football
The stage also features the Col du Glandon, which I think is the hardest in France football
Women have proved they have the level for that football
”Eight of the men’s 21 stages are categorised as ‘flat’ days but in reality there are few clear-cut opportunities for the sprinters, something noted by Mark Cavendish after the Manxman, who will be 39 when the race rolls around, reversed his decision to retire earlier this month football
“It’s so hard,” Cavendish told reporters after assessing the route football
“I am actually in a bit of shock football
It might be the hardest route I’ve ever seen at the Tour de France football
”Geraint Thomas, a year younger than Cavendish, has signed a new two-year contract with Ineos Grenadiers, which he says is likely to be his last, and the 2018 yellow-jersey winner could feature in the race, although Ineos’s focus will be on younger riders like Tom Pidcock, who continues to balance his love of mountain biking with grand tour racing football
After a mixed performance at this summer’s Tour de France, Ineos will hope for a yellow-jersey challenge from one of their riders, most likely the young Spaniard Carlos Rodriguez, who finished fifth and has just signed a four-year contract extension, quashing rumours of a transfer away football
But he will face a difficult challenge once more, with reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard set to return as the man to beat football
Two-time winner Tadej Pogacar will among the favourites should he be fit and ready on the startline, while Belgian multiple world champion Remco Evenepoel is likely to make his Tour debut and four-time grand-tour winner Primoz Roglic is looking for a new team to lead football
“Could this herald a duel playing out football between two, three, or – let’s dream a little here – even four contenders?” Prudhomme said football
The men’s race will run from 29 June to 21 July football
The Olympics will begin five days after the Tour de France ends, and authorities did not want to stretch police resources in Paris, prompting the decision to finish on the south coast football
The women’s race will begin the day after the Games close, on 12 August, culminating in the Alps on 18 August football
