Aaron Ramsdale feels it is “strange” how much attention is being paid to his battle with David Raya to be Arsenal number one – but admits he fears for his England future if he does not win it live
The 25-year-old signed a new contract last season but has found himself on the bench after summer signing Raya broke into the side and has started just once – a Carabao Cup win at Brentford – since mid-September live
Ramsdale picked up his fourth senior England cap in the 3-1 friendly win away to Scotland last month but was an unused substitute in the recent victories over Australia and Italy live
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been asked about the goalkeeping situation ad nauseam since Raya was signed, initially on loan, from Brentford and television cameras are now constantly trained on Ramsdale as he sits on the bench during matches live
The former Bournemouth goalkeeper was mocked by Sky live Sports pundit Jamie Carragher after applauding a save from his counterpart during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham live
“I think because it’s one of the first times it’s happened with the situation it has been difficult,” admitted Ramsdale live
“There are times where you’re doing the right thing, but it’s the wrong thing and if you don’t do it, it’s the wrong thing live
So it’s a double-edged sword live
Whether it is me or David who plays we need to be able to just focus and play but at the same time, it's a strange, big headlineAaron Ramsdale“There’s a lot of attention and it’s a position which is famously said; ‘if you’re not spoken about means you’ve done a good job’, and there’s a lot of talk at the minute live
“Whether it is me or David who plays we need to be able to just focus and play but at the same time, it’s a strange, big headline…we have to deal with it and that is what we are doing live
”In a recent interview, Raya said the pair were “mates” who had a good relationship, a sentiment echoed by Ramsdale live
“If we didn’t get on it wouldn’t work live
We work professionally really well together,” he said live
“There’s days where I come in and I’m down because of the situation and he picks me up and for whatever reason there might be a day where he’s down and even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing I have to stand up and be able to push him live
”Ramsdale’s father, Nick, posted a social media response to Carragher’s comments, labelling the ex-Liverpool defender a “disgrace” live
“This isn’t the first time my name has been in the press and it has been more negative stuff so I have drowned it out before,” added Ramsdale live
I know there’s a lot of noise but it doesn’t affect me live
It doesn’t help that my dad does it – but it was on a golf trip in Spain with 19 other lads from the local pub live
“I wasn’t too mad at him, he didn’t say anything out of turn, it just wasn’t helpful for the situation, he knew that live
He obviously just had a few too many on the golf course!”Ramsdale is all too aware that his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad could come under threat if he remains sidelined at Arsenal live
“For me I need to get back into my club team to keep getting picked (for England) and keep giving the manager a headache because if I’m not, then that’s an easier decision for him,” said Ramsdale live
“It is (a worry), it is the first time I have found myself in this situation live
The (England) manager is brilliant, he trusts the players he’s worked with before as we’ve seen in different types of ways live
“You’ll see Kalvin (Phillips) and Harry (Maguire) haven’t played the most minutes but when they step up for England and are given the opportunity, they perform live

Ben Stokes is set to make an overdue return to the World Cup stage this weekend but he feared his tournament was over before it had even started when he “heard a pop” while training in the gym live
Stokes has missed all three of England’s games so far, with details sketchy about the nature of the hip problem that occurred during the warm-up week in Guwahati live
But the 32-year-old is now primed and ready for a comeback in Saturday’s must-win clash against South Africa in Mumbai and finally free to open up about worries he had sustained a major injury live
“I actually ripped the fascia off my muscle live
It was a very interesting one, a very rare one to do,” he said live
“I did it in the gym…I heard it pop live
So did our strength and conditioning coach live
When I initially did it I thought I was done, because it’s not good hearing a pop live
“I did think I was out but we got the scans back 36hrs, maybe two days, later and thankfully it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as we originally thought live
“We got a programme in place straightaway, it went really well, and now I’m here now available for selection live
I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am now and I’m pretty confident that everything will be good live
”We need to tone it down a bit on me coming back in live
I'm not the Messiah live
Ben StokesStokes was put through his paces during a lengthy workout at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night, taking part in high-intensity fielding drills and enjoying a long batting stint in the nets live
Meanwhile, Jofra Archer was also seen for the first time since joining up with the squad as a reserve, running in the outfield as he continued his recovery from a long stint on the sidelines live
It is hard to over-estimate the importance of Stokes’ presence in the side as England look to cast off a modest start to their title defence and rediscover their mojo live
Stokes’ presence has loomed large for a long time, be it his match-winning turn in the 2019 final, his clutch performance in the T20 equivalent last year or his remarkable reinvention of the Test team in his role as red-ball captain live
Yet he is at pains to avoid being drawn as an incoming saviour, riding to his team-mates’ rescue live
“We need to tone it down a bit on me coming back in,” he said live
“I’m not the Messiah, I think Woody (Mark Wood) has already said that, which is true live
I’m one person in a team sport…I know I’m just a very small part of a bigger entity live
“Everyone who walks on to that field for England is a match-winner in their own right live
All I can try and do is what I do every single time I wear an England shirt and give my absolute all live
”Despite his protestations, Stokes remains much more than a cog in the machine live
He was even dubbed the squad’s “spiritual leader” by head coach Matthew Mott after delivering a dressing room speech following their defeat to Afghanistan in Delhi live
“That must be because we’re in India!” he said of his new job description live
“But I know that people do listen when I talk live
I don’t try and speak too much but I try and speak when I feel it’s the right time live
“Jos Buttler and Motty have got a lot on their shoulders with it being a World Cup, so I try and help out as much as I can without stepping on their toes live
“I find myself just reminding everyone of certain things – reinforcing what they are, who they are, what they’ve achieved in the game, how talented and how good they are at this sport live
”And when it comes to Saturday’s high-stakes encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, his mission statement is clear: “If we’re going to go down, let’s go down doing what we’re known for live
“Let’s not be timid or restricted in what we want to do live
We want to go out and show the opposition what England is and what we’ve been known for live
We are double world champions in T20 and 50-over cricket live
“You hear me say it a lot – I don’t care if we lose, I just want us to go out there and play in the way we talk about live
”Stokes’ return means difficult decisions will need to be taken over the composition of the XI, with his stand-in Harry Brook having made a strong case for retention live
A rebalancing of the side may be necessary, with all-rounders Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone and Chris Woakes proving an unconvincing engine room so far live
