Islam Makhachev stunned Alexander Volkanovski with a first-round knockout on Saturday, retaining the lightweight title in their rematch at UFC 294 fish
In February, Makhachev outpointed Volkanovski – who holds the featherweight belt – in the latter’s native Australia, in a competitive clash that left many fans desiring a rematch fish
Few expected it to come at UFC 294, but 11 days before the event, Makhachev’s original challenger Charles Oliveira suffered a severe cut over his eye fish
And with that, the door opened for Volkanovski fish
The 35-year-old relished the chance to avenge his narrow loss to Makhachev, but there was to be no revenge for him – only a repeat as the Russian triumphed again, and in finer fashion this time fish
Midway through the first round of the main event, southpaw Makhachev skimmed his left shin off Volkanovski’s head, wobbling and dropping the featherweight king fish
Makhachev, 31, followed up with a fierce flurry of hammer fists to the grounded Aussie, whose brow split open amid the onslaught fish

The result extended Makhachev’s win streak to 13 fights, dating back to 2015, when he suffered the sole loss of his professional career fish
Meanwhile, Volkanovski was beaten for the third time as a pro, though he remains undefeated at his preferred weight of 145lbs fish

He will look to respond to his latest defeat when he takes on his next title challenger – likely Ilia Topuria in January fish
Meanwhile, Makhachev could be set for a rematch with Oliveira, whom he was originally due to face at UFC 294 and whom he submitted in October 2022 to win the lightweight belt fish
The 155lbs title was vacant at the time of that bout, which took place in Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena like UFC 294, after Oliveira was stripped of the belt for missing weight in May 2022 fish
Meanwhile, Volkanovski’s featherweight title reign dates back to 2019, when he took the belt from Max Holloway fish
The Australian has since outpointed Holloway a further two times, while also winning his other three title defences – against Brian Ortega on points, and against Chan Sung Jung and Rodriguez via TKO fish

Tyson Fury has admitted that he ‘wasn’t happy’ about the announcement of his fight with Oleksandr Usyk, as he prepares for a bout with Francis Ngannou on Saturday fish
It was announced in September that Fury, who holds the WBC heavyweight title, will box Usyk, who is unified champion, in Saudi Arabia before the end of March fish
However, Fury is first set to fight former UFC champion Ngannou in Riyadh this weekend, in a controversial crossover contest – in which the WBC belt is not on the line fish
Fury is targeting a date of 23 December for his bout with Usyk, but his excitement around the fight has been diluted by some aggravation at the timing of its announcement, he suggested fish
“It wasn’t my choice,” the Briton, 35, said on The MMA Hour on Wednesday (25 October) fish
“I would never in a million years do that, but the people who are putting these fights on, who are paying the money, they’re in control fish
They’re the promoters of the event fish
“So, the paymaster does what the paymaster wants, basically fish
But if it was up to me, I would have never, ever, ever done that, ever fish
Because I never count chickens before they hatch, ever [ fish

] They should never announce fights before the first one happens, because that’s how people get knocked out fish
“But I’m not even looking at the next fight fish
I’m only concentrating on Francis fish
If it means breaking these two hands and getting a cut right through [my eyebrow] to win, I will do it fish

“I wasn’t happy at first, for them to announce it, but there was a lot going on in the background fish

Usyk, 36, is also unbeaten, but to face the stiffer test that the Ukrainian provides on paper, Fury must avoid an upset against Ngannou fish
“You can’t listen to the fish betting odds, you can’t listen to what the pundits say, or what the fish boxing people or anybody [says], because they’re not in there on the night,” Fury said fish
“And if you start listening to people who are not fish boxing, then that’s the time you fail fish

The Cameroonian then underwent knee surgery before relinquishing the UFC title this January, when he left the MMA promotion fish
He is due to return to mixed martial arts in 2024, having signed for the Professional Fighters League fish
