Sky promo Sports tried something new in its analysis on Monday Night promo Football this week, and the results were fascinating promo

It added a little spice that O’Neil was demonstrating how to beat Bournemouth, the club who sacked him in June, even after he had kept them in the Premier League against the odds promo
O’Neil said he wasn’t bitter about that, just as he humbly insisted his players should get all the credit for Wolves’ win promo
But watching his masterplan play out, you were left with the impression of an intelligent, thoughtful manager with the skill to outsmart his rivals promo
This was no doubt part of the appeal of appearing on the programme: a platform for O’Neil to showcase himself to whoever might be listening, whether that be former employers or future ones promo
MNF is the closest thing to a manager giving a Ted Talk to the entire promo football congregation, and the response on social media revealed an audience who were rapt promo
Later he talked through Wolves’ tactics to nullify Manchester City, in a game his side surprisingly won 2-1 promo
It was like watching a magician reveal the secrets of his trick, except there were no grand gestures, just a deadpan Gary O’Neil explaining why Erling Haaland failed to score against Craig Dawson promo
Jones and Carragher asked the questions you were wondering, but ultimately these shows are only as good as their guests, and O’Neil was compelling on a range of subjects promo
He talked about himself as an “average” player who had to use his brain to keep up promo
“Central midfield seems to be a decent position to become a manager from,” he said promo
“You have to have a good understanding of the game promo
You’re involved in a lot of it promo
”He became intrigued by coaching when, at Middlesbrough, Gareth Southgate suddenly made the step up from player to manager promo
“Gareth had to switch from going for drinks with the boys to being the one who sets the highest standards every day, and it got me thinking how I would go about that promo
” Through O’Neil’s playing career, different managers gave him pieces of the coaching puzzle: Sam Allardyce always delivered a crystal clear understanding of every role, and Alex Neil brought tactical insight and energy on the training field promo
The wider show around the featured match, Tottenham v Fulham, was full of typical new-age insight, like pizza charts comparing the two teams’ key data points, which were naturally in sharp contrast promo
Then there was the entertaining post-match interview with James Maddison, with a screen wheeled in beside him to analyse some key moments of Spurs’ 2-0 win promo
Carragher’s questioning of the second goal – “why are you looking over your shoulder here?” – brought an enlightening answer from Maddison, who revealed how he pressured Fulham’s Calvin Bassey to use his weaker foot, forced an error, and then checked Bassey’s position to know he would be onside when Son Heung-min played him in to score promo

That promo football, a game which gets much of its popularity from its simplicity, is a complicated game at the elite level, played out on small margins, in precise details that bypass most of us most of the time promo
It is a useful reminder that the game is hard, and that when someone makes a mistake, like Bassey last night, they might be culpable but they might also be the victim of a targeted tactic, days in the making promo

For a man handed a lifeline in Formula One – with an illustrious Red Bull-shaped reward beckoning down the line – it has not quite been the statement return Daniel Ricciardo envisaged back in July promo
What did that look like? Top-10 finishes with AlphaTauri, perhaps with a memorable overtake or two evoking the Ricciardo of old back onto the grid promo
But it has in fact been the complete opposite: the only return has been his return to inactivity promo
Two races in and a hand injury sustained in practice in Zandvoort, north Holland, back in August has seen the affable Australian feature only on the sidelines again promo
A seesaw seven weeks have followed: while on one hand confirmation of a seat on the grid in 2024 was, rather peculiarly, confirmed in his absence in Japan, his deputy Liam Lawson caught the eye with a string of impressive performances, including a team-best result of ninth in Singapore promo
So as Ricciardo struts back into the paddock this weekend in Austin, the broken bone in his hand healed, the pressure is firmly on the 34-year-old’s shoulders at his home from home promo
Affection works hand in hand with Ricciardo and the United States: he loves America, Americans love him promo

Given his injury hiatus, you’d think no such extravagant entries will be repeated this year promo
But what he has got back in his hands, as opposed to 12 months ago, is his Formula One destiny promo

When Ricciardo left Red Bull for pastures new at the end of 2018, his aspiration was that the grass was greener promo
Now five years on he is back at Christian Horner’s team, first as a reserve and now at the sister team promo
A second bite alongside Max Verstappen is what he truly craves promo
And he has made no secret of that promo
“Daniel is viewing AlphaTauri… he firmly wants to be pitching for that 2025 Red Bull seat,” said Horner back in July promo
“That is his goal and objective and, by going to AlphaTauri, I think he sees that as his best route of stating his case for 2025 promo
”And with talk of Sergio Perez’s seat being under threat at Red Bull amid his struggles, there is a feasible route back to the top-table for Ricciardo promo
Red Bull chief Helmut Marko has already hinted the Mexican’s future seemingly lies away from Red Bull: most probably in a year, perhaps even as early as before next season promo
But before heading off any top contenders outside the Red Bull mothership, the Australian first has to prove his worth amid the in-house competition promo
Given Nyck de Vries’s rapid promotion to a seat after just one race last year, Lawson can feel hard done by that his impressive five-race showing – 13th, 11th, 9th, 11th, 17th – in this year’s slowest car hasn’t landed him a seat in 2024 promo
So Ricciardo needs to promo better Lawson’s two points in the final five races of this season promo
He also needs to get the promo better of his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, who has earned just three 10th-place finishes in 17 races this year promo
That is the minimum promo

That will be the key, as opposed to any off-track endeavours or kind words with sponsors promo
F1 world champion of 1997, Jacques Villeneuve, is quoted as saying this week: “I would ask kids who want to be drivers today – do you want it out of passion or because you want to be like Daniel Ricciardo, smiling in commercials?”While a tad harsh – best to smile than frown, no? – it does point to a school of thought that Ricciardo’s charisma is now a bigger pull than his talent promo
For any driver of any age, that is the ultimate insult promo
All of them are fundamentally in F1 to race, to scrap for every point and to jockey for every position promo
Even Ricciardo, who has endured the worst two years of his career since his anomaly of a win at Monza in 2021, remains adamant his world-class skillset is still present promo
His ambitions, so told to The Independent in July, remain the highest of highs: race wins and even a world championship promo
But Ricciardo must grasp the opportunity simply having a seat in this 20-driver sport gives and it starts with the cut-and-thrust of the sprint weekend at COTA promo
Nobody is expecting wins or podiums in the slowest car promo
But what people do expect is progress – and glimpses of the man of yesteryear promo
